Ledyard Police Investigate Alleged Racial Slurs at Ledyard/Bacon Academy Girls Basketball Game in February 2022

On Saturday, February 5, 2022, at about 7:39 pm, the Ledyard Police Department was dispatched to the Ledyard High School located at 24 Gallup Hill Road for a reported disturbance. It was reported that after the girls’ varsity basketball game ended, parents from Ledyard and parents from Colchester were arguing and some parties were refusing to leave the gym.

Ledyard Police personnel arrived and ensured that all attendees were able to leave the school safely. Shortly thereafter, responding officers learned that either during or after the game, someone allegedly used a racial slur. Officers confirmed that this report was made to Ledyard High School’s athletic director. The Ledyard Police Department then opened an investigation to determine if any crime or crimes occurred during the game or the aftermath.

As part of said investigation, the Ledyard Police Department conducted many interviews, re-interviews and reviewed much video footage from several sources. We also worked closely with administration at the Ledyard High School.

Ledyard Police then began working with the State’s Attorney’s Office in New London. After additional interviews and more video review, the State’s Attorney’s (SA) Office reviewed the entirety of the case, including an arrest warrant affidavit. Ultimately, the SA determined that there was insufficient probable cause in this case.

Bacon Academy won the game in a close one, 56-55.
