Spring Ahead – Change your Clocks – Change your Batteries

This Saturday, March 12 we will set our clocks forward to observe Daylight Savings time. This a great time to change the batteries in all of your home’s detectors, both Smoke alarms as well as Carbon Monoxide detectors. By ensuring that the batteries in these life-saving tools are fresh, you can double your chances of surviving a home fire.

Because this event happens twice a year it is a great time to promote changing batteries in these lifesaving tools”, said Alan Zygmunt, Public Information Officer for the Connecticut Fire Academy, “Also, when you are changing the batteries, check for the date of manufacture on each unit. Smoke and CO detectors should be replaced every ten years.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA);

  • Three out of every five fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke detectors.
  • Ensuring that you smoke and carbon Monoxide detectors are working cuts your risk of fire death in half.
  • Smoke Alarms should be tested every month.

The Connecticut Fire Academy is the teaching arm of the Connecticut Commission on Fire Prevention and Control. Part of their mission is educating the public in fire and burn prevention.
